South Carolina Educational Television
In
1958, South Carolina began an experiment in teaching by television at
a Columbia high school. The project was a great success and the General
Assembly formally created the South Carolina Educational Television Commission
in 1960. With the strong support of the people of the state, SCETV rapidly
emerged as the nation's leading public and educational broadcasting system.
For 40 years education has been ETV's primary mission.
ETV's quality instructional programming harnesses television's enormous
power to inform and stimulate young minds. The network's education commitment
now extends from preschool to K-12 to adult education. Telecourses let
students earn college credit or a G.E.D. without leaving home. Teachers
and other professionals, including childcare providers, regularly update
job skills through ETV. And ETV's literacy campaign teaches adults to
read through easily accessible services. ETV's 32 channel digital satellite
system provides services to business and industry as well as state agencies.
SCETV also serves South Carolina's economic development
agencies and local units of government through such media production services
as industrial training and promotional and recruitment tapes. These support
services serve as a valuable resource as South Carolina recruits new industry
into the state.
